DC Motor / Smaller motors in smaller appications?
November 05, 2018, 03:44:19 PM
Hi
I bought an old Gutbrod mini-tractor with the idea to restore it for use on a smallholding. However, the engine is virtually scrap metal and parts are simply impossible to find, so I bought a bigger tractor to use. This is after I bought the new front and rear tyres, seat and other parts.
So to avoid losing the total investment made so far, I hit the idea of converting it to electrical. I played around with electric car ideas before and have a fibreglass complete body for a car but no chassis, and the logistics of registering it is daunting.
However, the tractor will never have to be registered, power needs is low (no hydraulics, air cooled, no three point lifts and a PTO that runs off the gearbox.)  That means if I manage to remove the engine (currently about 9hp lawnmower-type) and bolt an electric motor to the gearbox, connected to the input shaft, I should retain all the functions it had before. It should have enough space above the motor for about three or four lead acid batteries.
Any ideas on this build will be appreciated.

My question to the people on here is : 36V or 48V, and what size motor (wattage) would you go for. It would just be a runaround on the smallholding and towing a small trailer around.  Since this is "playing" i would also like to keep the spend as low as possible.
