DC Motor / EV Conversion of an old bakkie
Last post by PDBarron - March 08, 2023, 09:38:13 AM
Hi everyone!

I have a 1973 International Harvester 1310 all-wheel drive pickup (bakkie) that doesn't have an engine. I have recently begun toying with the idea of converting it into an electric-vehicle (sometime in the future) but I suspect it will cost an arm and a leg.

I recently tried to contact a company called EV Dynamics (based in Vereeniging, Gauteng) but it seems like they've gone out of business. I live in the Vaal Triangle (only about 25km from EV Dynamics) so I was hoping to buy EV components from them. Does anyone here know EV Dynamics, and what happened to them?

My idea for the EV conversion is to do as simple a swap as possible: an adapter plate connecting an electric-motor to the existing 4-speed transmission bell-housing, but without the clutch. The reasons I don't want to use a clutch are firstly, I don't have a clutch and secondly, a new clutch for this particular vehicle costs over R12,000 to import from the U.S. Would it be possible to retain the transmission in an electric drive-train, not using it, just leaving it in in the drive-train, in an appropriate gear? I literally only want to replace the V8 engine/flywheel/clutch with an electric motor. I don't want to remove or modify any other component in the drive-train. My whole idea is to keep the conversion cost as low as possible and the old truck as 'stock' as possible.

Electric motor: the V8 engine that came out of this bakkie only produced about 137kW so if I could install an electric motor with a comparable output I would be very happy. The higher torque of an electric motor is where the big improvement will be. Where do you guys source your electric motors? What are the available options in SA? How much do electric motors in the 150kW range cost?

Battery: I would like to start with a single (small) battery-pack, housed inside the engine-bay, then (as more money becomes available) add two additional battery-packs (in place of the dual 60-litre fuel tanks, under the load-bed, next to the chassis). With the initial battery I would only need a 60 - 70 kilometre range. Where do you guys source your batteries? How much do they generally cost?

Control/power electronics and charger: Are these available as integrated 'off the shelf' systems, at reasonable prices? Building your own system, using discrete components, would be cheaper if you know what you're doing, I suppose. What would you guys advise?

Thanks everyone, I look forward to learning from you.

EV Registration / Re: registering
Last post by Mike - February 08, 2023, 04:32:58 PM
Hi Leo,

Thanks for the insight into the closed door systems. Just a quick question but I am working with a new company (thulasolutions.com) designing and building EVs from the ground up and we were not sure at all where we should start the process of registering as an OEM.

If you have any clues that would be hugely appreciated.

Quote from: Leo on November 24, 2017, 01:13:54 PMHi to all. I converted a motorcycle to electric in 2013 and have done about 20000km since including 3 rebuilds. Up to the beginning of this year (2017) I worked as an auditor for the SABS, right next to the government NRCS (National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications). Currently there is no way to register a vehicle converted to electric since the government has not adopted a specification covering such conversions. There is a specification available but it must be first adopted and published in the government gazette. Then the NRCS must police it by auditor inspections of conversion facilities and competence of staff performing the conversion. Then the vehicle itself must be inspected by a technically qualified inspector, at a nationally accredited laboratory, and must pass the tests. None of this is possible currently because no one at NRCS is technically qualified or competent, no laboratory that is nationally accredited against this specification exists and I seriously doubt whether the specification has yet been adopted.
What all this means is that it is impossible to register a converted electric vehicle currently.
The only way around this is to keep the vehicle registered as a ICE vehicle. I spent close on R5k trying to register my first conversion only to be told, after spending all that money and wasted time, was that they can't help me.
I don't know if the situation has changed during the year but, knowing how slow government departments are, chances are that they haven't. Very sad for forward thinking people trying to save the planet.

Hi Jan,
You could perhaps try these local companies?

Hi All
I have just joined the group. I am rebuilding a 1960 VW Karmann Ghia which I want to convert to an EV.
Is it still the case that there are no SA based companies selling conversion kits? If so, has anyone had experience in importing kits from overseas and from which supplier?

Hi, I am interested to convert a Peugeot, and you mentioned converting a Renault Senic, any success or info about this available?

Hi,
We are not a business or an organisation. This is only a DIY site and our advice is free. We do not sell any components, kits or do conversions for customers. However if you are able to convert your own EV we would like to assist you with appropriate advice for your EV Conversion Projects.

How can we help?

Regards,
Barry.

Components / Best rout to go
Last post by patmar - October 11, 2020, 07:54:47 PM
Hi, I have a Smart4two 451 that had a main bearing fail. we had the crank sent to an engineering co to check and they decided
to grind it down 1 undersize. We have since found out that there are NO oversize bearings for this motor, not even from MB Germany. So I'm keen to do a EV conversion as my wife only uses it to go to work mostly, a round trip of 28km a day.
Any advice on how to proceed would be helpful.

DC Motor / Hub motors for an old fibregla...
Last post by nickbirkby - October 17, 2019, 11:51:04 AM
Hi all,
I have an old porsche speedster kit car that would suit an ev conversion. Its a beetle chassis.
Ive been looking at these hub motor conversion kits from a company called QS motors.
The price as follows,

2 units x QS260 3000W 72V V3 Electric Car Hub Motor : USD335/PC
2 units x Kelly Controller KLS7230H with Regenerative Braking: USD220/PC
1 unit x Doul Controller Assembly: USD180
1 unit x Pedal Throttle: USD50
1 unit x Control Box: USD15
1 unit x USB Cable: Free
1 unit x Speedometer X8-E: USD85
The shipping cost to South Africa by TNT: USD430
Total: USD1870

Im wondering if going the 10kw forklift motor route might be cheaper though. Any ideas on average price of a used motor?
As Im strapped for cash Im wondering also what the smallest battery bank I could get away with would be. Most of my destinations are around 10-12km as a round trip.
Thanks, Nick

Jdv,

This sounds like fun.

Any further developments?
