Hi Guys

I am new here "So HI" , it doesn't seem that there is a lot going on in the forum but I am hoping you guys can help. Is there any DC motor retailers in South Africa ? as I would actually like to do a conversion nut I need the motor to handle a 144V setup.

Hi Rudolph,
There are unfortunately no retailers, that we are aware of, for EV DC motors in South Africa. Electric motor suppliers and manufacturers in South Africa cater for the industrial sector only. A proper EV DC motor, 144V or more, 6000 rpm, 20kW to 25kW, should be used for a decent EV conversion. You could perhaps consider these guys:

Their K9 motor is a good choice.
We are using an American "Advance DC Motors", 156V, 25kW, motor currently for a Renault Senic conversion.
We will publish information regarding this EV conversion as well as information to build a PWM electronic motor controller, on the website, soon.
If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us, we will do our best to assist.
Best regards,
Barry.

Has anyone tried these guys in the States?
They supply a complete kit and the controller provides for regenerative braking.

I'm thinking about a motorcycle EV build. I've looked at the stuff from Thunderstruck but was hoping I could find some second hand DC motors in South Africa.
Where should I go looking ?  I can't seem to find anything online. Thanks!

There is very little interest in EV conversions by the South African Public. Therefore there is virtually no market for selling conversion kits or components such as motors etc. in the RSA and as a result, no business opportunity to do so. At this stage kits/components can only be imported at very high cost. From overseas, a good buy for a general purpose ev motor is this one. (https://kostov-motors.com/ev-motors/mtr-00332/). Locally you could perhaps consider a used forklift motor. A 10 kW 48 volt motor working from a 96V battery will work well for most EVs. Used forklift motors are available from Du Plessis Projekte, 1011 Van der Hoff Road, Claremont, telephone 082 414 6823 or 012 379 2287, email: [email protected]

Golden motors have an interesting 15kW BDLC motor offer that would be great for a electric motorcycle,

and the following company in Montague Gardens Cape Town (who import and sell their bicycle hub motor range) told me they could import a unit if someone was interested.

PS I own a Zero DS .... LOTS of problems with the electrics and battery :-(

Hi, I am interested to convert a Peugeot, and you mentioned converting a Renault Senic, any success or info about this available?
