Title: Complete Noob
Post by: bothagt on November 19, 2013, 10:16:45 AM
Hi guys

So, the E-toll story in Gauteng ticked me off. I started looking at all transport options and the EV conversion topic caught my attention (at least it will save the fuel levies if nothing else  ;)). Now I have never attempted anything like this before and I am trying to wrap my head around what I would like to accomplish. I currently drive a Land Rover Discovery 2 and a Volvo S60. I am not sure if I would want to do the conversion on either of these vehicles (admitted, the Ford conversion did make me toy with the idea of converting the Land Rover), and I am thinking that I would opt for another donor vehicle that has a substantial basic specification list, as i would still like to enjoy my daily commute in the vehicle. I am about 35km from the office one way, so I am looking at a total daily range of about 100km before the batteries will need to be recharged. Do you guys think this is doable or am I aiming too high?

Regards
Gerrit

Hi Gerrit

I am also planning an EV. My requirements are very similar. 70km return trip so 100km range will be a safe target to aim for. I think it will all come down to vehilce choice (weight/drag co-eff, batteries, speed requirements). The power consumption traveling on a flat road at 80km/h are about 3 x more than at 60km/h.

Hope fully we can help each other in our planning.

Hi Russell

Yeah we do seem to have a lot in common with requirements. I had a look at Yasa motors this past week and I have to say the specific torque per kilogram is very impressive. I am going to try and get in contact with these guys this week to get some more info.
